Barney Earl is built with ambition. At 31, he trains and works at CrossFit Weijver, a place he calls his second home. We sat down with him to discuss training, life and the future and found the story behind this athlete.

He grew up competing. Baseball from age 7, then rugby until he was 26. Hard training, hard culture. A teammate eventually invited him to his first CrossFit session. He walked in, got absolutely wrecked, and knew immediately this was exactly what he needed.
CrossFit started as a tool to become a better rugby player. A recurring shoulder injury led to surgery in 2019. During rehab, he could return to CrossFit faster than he could return to contact rugby. While Crossfit became more dominant, rugby slowly faded out.

Stepping into competition changed Barney’s approach completely. Suddenly nutrition mattered. Sleep mattered. The beers-after-training culture that had come with rugby started feeling incompatible with where he was going. He is honest about that transition: the beginning was hard. You leave one environment before the new one is built. But he stayed the course, found people who approached training and life the same way, and the gap closed.

When we spoke about weaknesses, he clearly addressed snatches as the biggest painpoint. The shoulder surgery left a long shadow over overhead work. For two years post-operation he could not snatch without pain, and spent close to nine months working with just a PVC pipe to rebuild a functional overhead squat from scratch. Most people would have quietly moved on to other things. Barney kept working at it.
On the other end of the spectrum: heavy cleans. Big barbell days. He lights up talking about them. 'Heavy barbells is happy days.'

When the workouts get dark, Barney talks to himself. He reminds himself what it is all for. He feeds off competition and the energy of people watching. This makes competitions the perfect stage for performance.
He has competed at Dutch Throwdown, Battle of the North, Amsterdam Throwdown and Lowlands. Each one gave him a new reference point. This year he is approaching competition differently, entering Lowlands and Amsterdam Throwdown in the buddy format. A new challenge, a new dynamic.

When we built the Baseline athlete team, we were not just looking at results. We were looking for people with the personality and mindset that matches our brand. Showing up, setting ambitious goals, and inspiring others. Barney is that kind of athlete.
His advice to anyone thinking about starting CrossFit? Two words: do it. Where you start does not matter. Find the right environment, find the right people, and go from there. He has lived that, and it works.
